How to Upcycle your Coffee Grounds

How to Upcycle your Coffee Grounds – Kiss the Hippo coffee, put sustainability at the forefront of their mission. That is why they are notably a carbon negative coffee company. They do everything they can to reduce unnecessary waste from compostable coffee pods to recyclable packaging.

In their Kiss the Hippo cafés they turn their used coffee grounds into biofuel. Not necessarily something we can do at home, but they have tried and tested a method of making used home coffee grounds into something just as useful, a homemade coffee exfoliant which is the peak of natural self-care.

For your home scrub, Kiss the Hippo suggest using finer coffee grounds rather than course for this particular beauty treatment, this is to help prevent irritation to the skin. With the sand-like texture, the treatment works to gently remove dead skin cells, helping rejuvenate and boost circulation, leaving your skin glowing, feeling silky-smooth and looking fresher than ever.

All you need to make your own exfoliant is four ingredients and three simple steps.

Ingredients

1/2 cup of dried used ground coffee (the finer the better)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup melted coconut oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Mix 1/2 cup ground coffee with 1/2 cup brown sugar

Add 1/2 cup coconut oil and 1tsp vanilla extract into the coffee mixture

Mix well until combined

To store, keep in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge and your home-made beauty mixture will keep for several weeks.

To use, simply scoop out a small portion and gently buff onto the skin in a circular motion.

Rub the mixture over your body, avoiding the eyes, and leave it on for several minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

And if using in the shower, be careful – the oil can make the floor slippery!
