Tablescaping: The Art of Setting the Scene (and Why Everyone’s Doing It Right Now)
There was a time when laying the table meant little more than plates, cutlery, and perhaps a vase of flowers if guests were coming. But in 2026, the table has become something else entirely: a stage for creativity, self-expression, and seasonal joy. Enter tablescaping, the trend that’s turning everyday dining into an experience.

Whether it’s a summer lunch in the garden, a birthday brunch with friends, or simply making a midweek meal feel more special, tablescaping is proving that the way we set the table can completely transform the mood of a gathering.
What is tablescaping?
Tablescaping is essentially styling a table as you would style a room. It goes beyond functional dining essentials and introduces layered textures, colour palettes, statement tablecloths, decorative centrepieces, napkin styling, candles, seasonal details, and creative place settings.
Think of it as a mix of interior design and entertaining, a way of telling a story through the table.
And the best part? Tablescaping doesn’t have to be expensive or overly formal. It can be playful, relaxed, and personal, with elements you already have at home.
Why is tablescaping on trend right now?
Tablescaping has surged in popularity for a few reasons. Firstly, many of us are embracing the idea of making more of the everyday, especially when it comes to eating at home. Social media has also played a big part, beautifully styled tables are endlessly shareable, and people love showcasing seasonal hosting moments.
But there’s also something deeper to it. Tablescaping taps into the growing desire for connection, for slowing down, and for creating a sense of occasion, even in small ways. In a busy world, setting a beautiful table is a gentle reminder to pause and enjoy the moment.

Tablescaping inspiration from the Ideal Home Show
At my recent visit to the Ideal Home Show, the Style Makers Laurie Davison and Reli Farjon shared their tips on creating a vibrant, tropical-inspired tablescape through bold colour choices, layered patterns, and simple, effective styling techniques.
Their approach was bright, uplifting, and perfect for summer entertaining – and it proved that with the right balance, you can create something that feels both bold and beautifully pulled together.

Creating a standout summer table
According to Laurie and Reli, one of the easiest ways to anchor a table is with a bold statement tablecloth. A striking yellow and white cloth, layered with olive green accents and mixed prints, instantly created a vibrant, cohesive look that felt tropical, warm and inviting.
Their key advice? Keep the colour palette tightly edited. They stressed that limiting yourself to no more than three core colours create impact without overwhelming the eye. It’s the difference between a table that looks stylish and intentional, and one that feels visually chaotic.
Mixing patterns with confidence
If you’ve ever hesitated before combining prints, tablescaping is your excuse to be fearless. The Style Makers encouraged mixing stripes, florals, and watercolour designs, as long as the colour palette remains consistent.
They also highlighted the importance of scale. Pairing large, bold prints with smaller, more delicate patterns creates balance and keeps the table looking curated rather than cluttered. It’s a simple styling trick, but it makes a huge difference.
Affordable styling tricks that look expensive
One of the most refreshing parts of their demonstration was how achievable it all felt. Laurie and Reli showed how to elevate a table with accessible ideas, including supermarket flowers and versatile tableware that can be used for multiple occasions.
Their standout centrepiece was particularly clever: a simple salad bowl fitted with a flower frog to hold stems in place. Not only did it create a striking arrangement, but it used fewer flowers than a traditional vase display, making it a creative and budget-friendly alternative that still looked luxurious.
Adding playful, seasonal details
Tablescaping is all about those small touches that make people smile. The Style Makers used citrus fruits, lemons, oranges and grapefruit as decorative accents and even improvised vessels, adding texture, colour and a fresh summer feel.
It’s a simple idea, but incredibly effective. Fruit brings a natural vibrancy to the table, and it’s something most of us already have in the kitchen.
They also showcased creative napkin folds, including floral-inspired designs, as a finishing touch. It’s one of those details that instantly elevates a place setting and adds personality, without requiring a big budget or hours of effort.
Why tablescaping is worth trying
Tablescaping is more than just a trend, it’s a way of making gatherings feel thoughtful and memorable. It encourages creativity, brings beauty into the everyday, and helps turn meals into moments.
You don’t need designer tableware or a perfectly styled home. All you need is a starting point: a colour palette, a few layered textures, and the confidence to play.
Because sometimes, it’s not about what’s on the menu, it’s about the atmosphere you create around the table. And tablescaping is the perfect way to do just that.
