Dr Bronner’s Ecological Soaps – 150 years and 5 generations of family soapmaking.
Dr. Bronner’s was founded in 1948 by Emanuel Bronner, a third-generation master soapmaker from a German-Jewish soapmaking family. He used the labels on his superb ecological soaps to spread his message that we must realise our unity across religious and ethnic divides or perish: “We are All-One or None!”
Still family-owned and run, Dr. Bronner’s honours its founder’s vision by continuing to make socially and environmentally responsible products of the highest quality, and by dedicating our profits to help make a better world. All-One!
When introduced to this range, I was totally absorbed when reading the history of this fascinating company. Their knowledge and skills which have been passed down from generation to generation have been maintained and developed and are still producing outstanding products.
Soaps have been made for millennia. Alongside making fire and cooking food, turning oils and fats into soap is one of the oldest and simplest chemical reactions known to humankind. It is believed that the first soaps were accidentally made by fat dripping into the ashes of cooking fires.
The process of soapmaking
Soap is made by saponifying a fat or oil with an alkali. A fat or oil is a triglyceride, which means that three fatty acids of various carbon lengths are attached to a glycerin backbone. The alkali is either sodium hydroxide (lye) for bars or potassium hydroxide (potash) for liquids. Alkali is made by running electricity through saltwater.
The saponification process is a simple one-step reaction with no waste generated: the glycerin is split off from the fatty acids, and the fatty acids combine with the sodium or potassium to form soap, while the hydroxide forms water. The result is soap, glycerin and water (no alkali remains in our soaps).
Women Talking had the opportunity to try a selection of products in the Dr Bronner range with pleasing results:
With the recent pandemic the one product I have been continually reaching for is the Dr Bronner organic hand sanitiser spray, which is quick and simple to use and discreetly fits in to my handbag, accompanying me everywhere I go. I also have one in the car giving me peace of mind as I can spray my hands as well as my environment when getting in and out of the vehicle.
Organic hand sanitiser spray, organic and fair trade
The Organic Hand Hygiene Spray kills germs with a simple formula: organic ethyl alcohol, water, organic lavender oil, and organic glycerin. None of the nasty chemicals you find in conventional sanitisers, but just as effective. It is perfect for using on the go, on your little ones’ sticky hands and faces, even as an air freshener or deodorant, allowing you to freely sanitise your environment with a clean conscience.
Pure- Castle Liquid Soap – This product is completely versatile. So kind, and gentle, it lathers beautifully and is totally effective. I have really enjoyed using it and experimenting with their selection of scents. It can be used on your face, body, hair, cleaning the dishes, mopping the floor even washing your pets. It is totally understandable why it has been a Winner for the Natural Health Beauty Awards 2020 and shortlisted for the Beauty Wellbeing Awards 2020
The Pure-Castile liquid soap is concentrated and biodegradable. Made with organic and certified fair-trade ingredients, packaged in a 100% post-consumer recycled bottle.
Organic Lotion – Living in an area with hard water, personally, I cannot leave the bathroom after showering without using a body lotion. Having the opportunity to nourish and hydrate my skin with good ingredients is an added benefit: organic jojoba oil to heal and soothe, organic coconut oil to moisturise, organic hemp and avocado oils to keep skin smooth and supple.
This product is good for most skin types, sensitive-dry-rough-or combination and gentle enough to be used anywhere — hands, face or body.
