Although after an 18-year posting he returned to England, having a great fondness for his time spent in India he decided to return in 1872 and cleverly used his savings to make a living by planting tea in Darjeeling.
The seeds of a tea dynasty were planted and subsequently, Birchall Graham continued in the tea trade, successfully developing the business, and acquiring the knowledge and expertise to create the finest teas in the world.

Their new Birchall Tea Factory in Amesbury, Wiltshire reflects this commitment – it is the UK’s first solar-powered tea factory and its roof-top solar installation features more than 460 solar panels, which can generate all clean renewable electricity for their on-site operations.
In May 2020, they achieved the Carbon Neutral International Standard which means that all Birchall Tea products are now 100% Carbon Neutral.
They are dedicated to a long-term commitment to creating perfect-tasting tea but also work hard to ensure that all their teas are sustainably sourced in a manner which respects both the environment and our tea producers.
In 2006, they introduced Fairtrade Teas to their food service range and in 2009 began offering leaf teas from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms. Today, most of their black teas – including all their signature Great Rift and Virunga teas – carry the Rainforest Alliance’s famous green frog seal. This means that these teas are grown in a way that helps protect the environment and farm workers and their families.
