Personal Review: American Dreamer – In a world where there’s such a diverse array of films to choose from, I was drawn to American Dreamer because of its intriguing premise—a dark comedy that explores the gap between big dreams and harsh realities. With standout performances from Peter Dinklage and Shirley MacLaine, and the promise of a story that mixes humour and emotional depth, it felt like the perfect choice to dive into when looking for something both thought-provoking and entertaining.
Peter Dinklage plays Phil Loder, a twice divorced, frustrated, underpaid, low-level adjunct professor of economics whose dreams of owning a home seem tragically out of reach. But that doesn’t stop him from dreaming—and ultimately, it’s his tenacity and unique worldview that give the film its heart.
Based on a true story, Phil’s life is stuck in a reality that doesn’t quite match his aspirations, but when an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes his way—a lonely, childless widow Astrid Finnelli (Shirley MacLaine) offers him her sprawling estate for pennies—Phil’s dream of homeownership seems within reach. However, Phil soon learns the deal is too good to be true, and the American dream may not be as it seems.
The film explores the constant struggle between hope and despair, with Phil battling his own disillusionment while clinging to the idea that maybe, just maybe, his dreams will come true. Dinklage brings so much vulnerability and grit to the role, while MacLaine’s sharp-witted, cynical character offers a perfect counterbalance. Their chemistry is palpable, and it adds layers of complexity to their interactions, allowing the humour to shine through even in moments of despair.
In the midst of all the bleakness and hardship, American Dreamer teaches us that it’s okay to laugh at life’s absurdities. The characters’ struggles are real, but their humour offers them—and us—a chance to look at life through a more hopeful lens. Even in the darkest moments, a good laugh can be a source of light.
Ultimately, American Dreamer isn’t just about the pursuit of dreams; it’s about finding joy in the journey—even when things don’t go as planned. And that, in itself, is a dream worth chasing and I found it entertaining.
