Book Review: New English Interiors: At Home with Today’s Creatives by Elizabeth Metcalfe.

If there’s one book that perfectly captures the heart and soul of English interior design as it stands today, it’s New English Interiors by Elizabeth Metcalfe, with breathtaking photography by Dean Hearne. A celebration of creativity, character, and that unmistakable British charm, this beautifully crafted book has instantly earned its place on my (ever-growing) pile of treasured coffee table books.

Book Review: New English Interiors

The English style of interior design, as showcased throughout the pages, is not so much a trend as it is a timeless philosophy—an ever-evolving blend of colour, pattern, and personal storytelling. It is as much about intuition as it is about curation. The book shares a selection of homes filled with personality and purpose, where wallpaper, textiles, vintage finds, and meaningful objects layer together to tell a story that can only belong to their owners. The magic of English interiors lies in their refusal to be overly polished or formulaic; instead, they embrace whimsy, eccentricity, and that unique sense of ‘home’ that grows organically over time.

Elizabeth Metcalfe, a seasoned interiors journalist, curates a tour of 22 incredibly inspiring homes belonging to some of England’s most vibrant creatives—artists, designers, stylists, and illustrators. From Lucinda Chambers’ kaleidoscopic London home to Fee Greening’s cozy, earthy cottage in Dorset, every space bursts with personality and proves that style and substance are not mutually exclusive. The homes of Cath Kidston, Luke Edward Hall, and Annie Morris (to name a few) further showcase the joyful spectrum of English taste, from bold theatricality to rustic restraint.

Dean Hearne’s photography is truly exceptional—each image is rich in detail, mood, and composition. The light, textures, and layers are captured in a way that makes you feel like you’re stepping right into each room. His work elevates the book far beyond a standard interiors guide; it’s a visual journey that invites you to slow down, linger, and absorb the character of each home.

More than a book of inspiration, New English Interiors is a reminder of the joy in creating a space that reflects who you are. Whether you’re a maximalist, a collector, a colour enthusiast, or simply someone who finds comfort in the imperfect charm of lived-in spaces, this book offers endless inspiration.

It’s a must for anyone drawn to the romance of English design—and for me, it’s an absolute joy to add to my collection. As a lover of interiors and a sucker for beautiful books, this is one I’ll keep dipping into time and time again.
