SOS Serum Skincare: Simple, Soothing Skincare Without the Fuss – I’ve spent a couple of decades around hair and beauty products, so I’ve tried more than my fair share of skincare over the years. And while I’m always interested in what’s new, I’ve become increasingly convinced that skincare doesn’t necessarily need to be complicated to be good.
In fact, when your skin is feeling dry, sensitive or simply a little unhappy, sometimes the last thing it needs is a bathroom shelf full of products and a complicated list of active ingredients.
That’s one of the reasons I’ve been enjoying discovering SOS Serum Skincare.
The range was founded by Bruce Green, a Chartered Formulation Chemist and Scientist, with a particular focus on creating skincare for sensitive, dry and problematic skin. What appealed to me initially was that the products are designed to be soothing and uncomplicated, while still offering some clever ingredients and formulations.
And there’s another big plus: you can find SOS Serum in Superdrug and Amazon, as well as online, so it doesn’t feel like one of those brands you discover and then struggle to get hold of again.
Keeping things kind to your skin
Sensitive skin can be a bit of a minefield. What works beautifully for one person can leave another person’s skin feeling irritated, tight or uncomfortable.
SOS Serum takes a gentler approach, with products designed to hydrate, soothe and support the skin rather than bombarding it with a long list of potentially irritating ingredients.
The original SOS Serum is a good example. It’s an oil-free, cooling serum designed to moisturise and soothe dry and problematic skin. Peppermint, Wasabi and Burdock extracts give it a naturally cooling feel, which is particularly pleasant when skin is feeling uncomfortable.
There’s also SOS Cleanse, a lightweight cleanser designed to remove makeup and everyday impurities without relying on alcohol, acids or aggressive surfactants. For me, cleanser is one of those products where gentle really does matter. There’s little point in removing every last trace of makeup if you then leave your skin feeling stripped and tight.
A little something for the whole routine
What I also like about the range is that it doesn’t stop at one hero product.
There’s SOS H20 Day Cream SPF 30, which combines moisturisation with everyday UVA and UVB protection, and an SOS Night Cream for those who prefer a little more nourishment in their evening routine.
The range also includes SOS Eye, a lightweight eye serum with encapsulated caffeine and a cooling roller-ball applicator. I’m a big believer in giving the eye area a little extra TLC, and anything that makes application feel like a small moment of self-care gets my vote.
Then there’s SOS Lip, a nourishing lip balm with SPF 30. It’s one of those products that makes perfect sense when you think about it – our lips are exposed to the same cold, wind and sunshine as the rest of us, yet they’re often forgotten when it comes to protection.
My favourite? The SPF 50
Of all the products I’ve been using, SOS SPF 50 Sun Cream is probably my favourite.
I’m very particular about facial SPF. I want good protection, but I don’t want something heavy, greasy or strongly fragranced sitting on my skin all day.
This one is fragrance-free and designed for sensitive skin, with a mineral Zinc Oxide filter providing UVA and UVB protection. It also contains Vitamin E and Soy Bean Stem Cell.
What I particularly appreciate is that it can be used on both the face and body, making it a useful product to have around rather than another bottle that only has one job.
And, importantly for me, it doesn’t come with a luxury skincare price tag.
Good skincare doesn’t have to cost a fortune
This is perhaps what makes SOS Serum stand out most.
The range is very reasonably priced, with some products starting at around £5 for the smaller 15ml sizes. The 50ml SOS Serum, Cleanse and H20 Day Cream, for example, are all around the £16–£17 mark.
That makes the range an easy one to try without committing to an expensive skincare regime and the smaller sizes are particularly useful for travelling or simply finding out whether a product suits you.
Skincare that doesn’t shout
There are so many skincare launches these days, with increasingly complicated routines and ingredients that sound as though they belong in a chemistry lab.
SOS Serum feels rather different.
It’s not trying to persuade you that you need 12 steps before breakfast. Instead, it focuses on the basics: cleanse, hydrate, soothe, moisturise and protect.
And perhaps that’s why I’ve enjoyed using it. It feels like sensible skincare, products that are easy to understand, easy to use and, importantly, easy to incorporate into everyday life.
For anyone whose skin tends to be on the sensitive side, or for those who simply prefer a straightforward approach to skincare, I think SOS Serum is a range worth discovering.
And being able to pick it up at Superdrug makes discovering it that little bit easier.
