The Power of Gentle Healing: Why Bio Velvet Works with the Skin, Not Against It.

When it comes to skincare, women are often searching for products that truly support the skin rather than overwhelm it. Bio Velvet is one such discovery — a cream rooted in nature, guided by science, and trusted by families around the world. Founded by veterinarian and scientist Dr Doron Zur, Bio Velvet was inspired by one of nature’s most remarkable regenerative processes: the way deer naturally shed and regrow their antlers each year. We spoke to Dr Zur about the moment that sparked his curiosity, the science behind the formula, and why gentle, natural skin recovery has always been at the heart of Bio Velvet.

The Power of Gentle Healing

Bio Velvet began with a moment of discovery in New Zealand. Can you take us back to that experience and explain what first fascinated you about deer antler regeneration?

Although Bio Velvet is a product for human use, its origins are from an entirely different field. Over 20 years ago, our family took a trip to Australia and New Zealand. We fell in love with New Zealand and decided to stay there for a period of time. As a veterinarian, I began working at a local clinic, where I encountered a case that would ultimately change the direction of my professional life.

One of my patients was Excel, a very large Saint Bernard weighing close to 80 kilograms (around 200 pounds). He suffered from severe hip problems and had already undergone two knee surgeries, yet he was still unable to stand on his own. His owners, an elderly couple, were physically unable to lift him, and despite trying every conventional treatment available at the time, nothing helped. They had scheduled an appointment to put him out of his misery.

The night before that appointment, I attended a lecture on the benefits of deer velvet — the soft, rapidly regenerating tissue that forms deer antlers. I was fascinated by its regenerative properties, specifically for joint diseases. Naturally, when Excel and his owners came to my clinic, I suggested it as a last option. Thankfully, they agreed.

Two weeks later, I received a phone call that I will never forget. Excel was standing, moving, and even running again. His improvement was so remarkable that his owners asked if deer velvet might also benefit them. That experience led me to begin using deer velvet more broadly in my practice for dogs suffering from degenerative joint disease, and to start developing dedicated products.

About ten years later, I came across research showing that deer velvet could significantly accelerate wound healing when used topically. At the same time, I was personally dealing with severe seborrhea and relying on steroid creams on a daily basis. I decided to develop a topical product that could offer a natural, effective alternative. After several years of development, we created a cream that not only solved my own skin condition but also proved highly effective in supporting faster healing of wounds, burns, and various other skin conditions.

The Power of Gentle Healing

As a veterinarian and scientist, what connections did you see between antler regeneration and the skin’s natural healing process?

Antler regeneration is a unique biological phenomenon. A deer can regenerate antlers from a small pedicle into a structure weighing up to 18 kilograms within approximately six weeks, with growth rates reaching up to two centimeters per day. This process involves a complex combination of growth factors, minerals, amino acids, and other biological components, and the exact mechanisms are still not fully understood.

What caught my scientific attention, however, was a shared underlying principle rather than an identical process. During velvet antler growth, there is a very strong process of angiogenesis- the formation of new blood vessels. From my understanding and experience, this angiogenic activity is a key factor in supporting and accelerating tissue repair.

Healthy wound healing in skin also depends heavily on blood supply, oxygenation, and nutrient delivery. While the tissues themselves are different, the ability of velvet antler components to support angiogenesis appears to be one of the main reasons we observed faster and more effective wound healing when these components were used topically.
While this is a compelling biological theory, backed by numerous cases we’ve seen over the years, it is important to note that the precise mechanism by which velvet antler components influence skin healing is not yet fully understood.

Deer Antler Velvet is a unique ingredient. In simple terms, what makes it so effective for skin renewal and recovery?

Deer Antler Velvet is a truly unique ingredient because it’s packed with natural compounds that support the skin’s own repair and renewal processes. It contains growth factors that help stimulate cell regeneration, amino acids that provide the building blocks for healthy skin, and minerals that nourish and strengthen tissue. Together with other naturally occurring proteins and nutrients, these components work in harmony to help the skin recover, stay resilient, and maintain a healthy, revitalized appearance. Bio Velvet supports the skin’s own healing rather than forcing change. Why was this approach important to you?

From the very beginning, it was important to me not to “force” the skin to behave in a certain way, but rather to support the natural processes that are already there.

Both in veterinary medicine and in human care, I’ve seen that when you try to aggressively override the body – whether with strong medications or short-term solutions – you may see quick results, but often at the cost of long-term balance. Skin, like any living tissue, has an inherent ability to repair and regenerate when the right conditions are present.
That is why Bio Velvet was developed using natural components. This philosophy also came from personal experience, after years of relying on steroid creams, which treated symptoms but didn’t truly support healing.

The formula combines Deer Antler Velvet with botanicals, sea minerals and vitamin C. How do these ingredients work together to support sensitive skin and use for all ages?

Developing the Bio Velvet formula was a long and very deliberate process. It took us several years to identify the right botanicals, essential oils, sea minerals, and vitamin C that could work in true synergy with Deer Antler Velvet.
Rather than focusing on a single “active” ingredient, we looked at how each component could support the others. Deer Antler Velvet brings its unique regenerative properties, while the botanicals and essential oils were carefully selected for their soothing and balancing qualities. Sea minerals help support the skin’s natural barrier, and vitamin C contributes to overall skin vitality.

What we discovered over time was that the formula works best as a whole – the ingredients enhance one another rather than act independently. It’s very much a case of one plus one becoming three. This synergy allows the product to be gentle enough for sensitive skin, while still effective in supporting the skin’s natural recovery processes.

Because the formula is based on carefully balanced, naturally derived components and avoids aggressive stimulation, it is suitable for all ages and for skin that needs support rather than intervention.

Many women experience skin challenges linked to stress, hormones, pregnancy or menopause. Were these real-life needs considered when creating Bio Velvet?

Not initially. The product was developed first and foremost from a scientific perspective, focusing on supporting the skin’s natural healing processes in a gentle and balanced way. It wasn’t designed to address hormonal or gender-specific skin concerns.

While Bio Velvet remains a supportive formula for all skin types, we are now exploring new products that could target the unique needs of women during pregnancy, menopause, and other times of change.

What feedback from users has had the greatest impact on you since the product launched?

The feedback that moves me most is hearing how Bio Velvet has truly helped people. Having struggled myself with a persistent, itchy skin condition that didn’t respond to treatment, I understand the frustration. When users share that the product has eased their atopic dermatitis or other skin challenges or come to thank me personally at my veterinary clinic, it’s incredibly rewarding. Those stories remind me why we created Bio Velvet: to offer natural, scientifically based care that genuinely makes a difference.

More than two decades after that first moment of discovery, Bio Velvet remains a testament to what can happen when science listens to nature. For Dr Doron Zur, it has never been about quick fixes or cosmetic promises, but about creating a product that works in harmony with the skin — supporting recovery, comfort and confidence at every stage of life. As women continue to seek thoughtful, effective solutions for themselves and their families, Bio Velvet stands as a reminder that sometimes the most powerful answers are already written into nature itself.
