Lulu'z – the home of fresh delights

Farah Mohammadi

Celebrating her first year in business, Farah Mohammadi, owner of Lulu'z Patisserie in Twickenham is offering a bespoke celebration cake to a deserving person or organization.

Lulu’z is the culmination of a five-year journey that started with a dream and the question “what if?”

”For many years I was a 9-5 worker always looking for the next challenge” says Farah. I wanted to do something different but wasn’t sure what. A dear friend once said to me ‘Knowing what you don’t want is good, you’re half way there’ but I wanted the whole picture. In 2007 I went on holiday to Barcelona and fell in love with everything it had to offer. A chance meeting on the return flight helped me to clarify what my dream was and gave me the final incentive to begin pursuing it.

”I returned to Barcelona and trained for three years under world-renowned patissiere chefs Alejandro Mones and Pablo Iglesia. They taught me the beauty of fresh, organic food prepared with love. I was inspired to open my own patisserie but I wanted it to be more than that. I wanted to be involved with the community. My vision is to provide an environment where people can come and share with me important aspects of life – enjoying a good relationship with food in a place you learn through experience while relaxing with friends. I wanted a place where people come and rediscover their love of good food and children can come to understand what they’re eating; hence my wish to start educational and interactive classes for kids in the near future. With a lovely large space upstairs Lulu’z is the ideal location.

“Five years after I started on this journey my dream is now a reality. Lulu’z is not just a patisserie but also a message in positivity to everyone: believe in yourself and follow that dream.”

Farah grew up surrounded by good cooks who were an inspiration.

“I wanted to cook the way my grandma used to. Our food was always fresh, homemade with no additives or preservatives and we ate from the land. My values have not changed and I still feel it vitally important to support my local community. Here in Twickenham we use only fresh, organic and locally sourced produce wherever possible.”

With a 6am daily start, Farah is determined to offer nothing but fresh, tasty food sensations to her customers. Working with her in the kitchen is a great team of talented in-house bakers who make their mouth-watering range of cakes, bread and baked goods daily.

Once Farah acquired the premises in 2012 she had six weeks to gut them, update the walls, ceilings and redecorate ready for business. She chose soothing earth and sea colours for a relaxing dining environment.

“The most difficult challenge” says Farah “was to get started. I did get help from the citizens advice for business but arranging bank loans and finance was time consuming and challenging, there just never seems enough time when you do everything yourself but there is nothing more rewarding than when customers come back, that is what makes it all worthwhile.”

On my visit to Lulu’z I could see that Farah has a natural instinct to inject positive energy into food. The displays of delicious giant macaroons, carrot cake and croissants were piled high. Care and love goes into the preparation of Lulu’z food and, with a great selection of healthy, nutritional treats it was hard to make a choice. However, the French onion soup with Emmental cheese toast was sensational and I left with a great selection of sweet treats for home, which the family quickly demolished with gusto.

From the freshly brewed hand roasted 100% Arabica coffee, made with fair-trade Organic beans, to gluten-free cakes and melt-in-the-mouth desserts and sandwiches made-to-order, there is something for every taste. So whether you’re a commuter, a mum wanting somewhere to relax with friends or just to treat yourself, Lulu’z has a warm welcome waiting.
