Sugar Coated is the brainchild of Rosie Khandwala. Her story goes back to the shores of the Indian Ocean on the northeast coast of Tanzania. Growing up in Tanzania sugar waxing was the only form of hair removal she used. She learnt how to sugar wax from her mother and older sisters. Helping in her cousin’s salon after school as a teenager, she learned the tricks and techniques for the best and gentlest results. When she moved to the UK in 1987 with her young family, she wanted to start working as a mobile beauty therapist but to her amazement sugar waxing didn’t exist, she couldn’t find it anywhere, so she started making her own!

Seeing this glaring hole in the market she and her husband set out on introducing sugar waxing to the UK. Starting manufacturing at home she soon outgrew the kitchen and they found premises nearby where the sugar wax is still manufactured by her today, in the still family-owned and operated business.

Rosie got her first breakthrough in 1990 when she approached The Body Shop. It was a match made in heaven. Two ethically minded companies teaming up to introduce something innovative into the market. It was during this time that she also developed her unique recipe which eliminated the use of lemon juice (citric acid) providing an even gentler product that removed the irritation that could be caused by citric acid. To this day they are the only company in the world that makes a sugar-based hair removal from just sugar and water. After 18 years of successfully supplying The Body Shop, Rosie decided to launch her own retail brand in the market called Sugar StripEase. During this time, she introduced washable and reusable strips into the market and put ethical and eco-friendly manufacturing and packaging at the forefront.

After 10 years with Sugar StripEase, it is time for a change. Rosie has taken her 30+ years of experience and knowledge of hair removal and sugar waxing and poured it into Sugar Coated.

Not only an expert on waxing, but we were also thrilled to have Rosie’s bespoke natural recipe for the perfect DIY face mask that combines Chickpea Flour, Avocado, Turmeric, and Rose Water, which was such a joy to use, we felt too good not to share.

Google searches for Natural Face Masks are up by 71% in the UK, proving that people are still looking in their kitchen cupboards to make their skin glow.

Chickpea Flour, Avocado, Turmeric and Rose Water Face mask

Sugar Coated - Sugar Wax

You will need:

3 heaped tbsp of chickpea flower

½ ripe avocado – mashed into a smooth paste

2 tbsp of rose water

¼ tsp of turmeric – free from artificial colour

Mini pink rose bud petals

How to make the paste:

Mix all the ingredients together and let the paste rest for 5 minutes to get all the ingredients fused.

Pop on a headband and cleanse your face.

Apply the paste with your finger, gently rubbing in circular motion (avoid contact with eyes)

Leave the paste on for 15-20 minutes

Using a wet sponge, remove and wash your face with cold water

Feel and see the results instantly!

The Chickpea Flour acts as an exfoliant to gently get rid of any dirt or dead skin cells. The Avocado’s fatty acids hydrate and soften the skin. Turmeric is a fantastic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, so will help keep those pesky pimples at bay. And last but not least, the added Rose Water works as a toner that soothes skin.

Enjoy!
