August Birthstone - Peridot
Every month of the year is represented by their own special gemstone and in August, it is the green peridot. It is also the stone for the zodiac sign of Leo and Virgo. Furthermore, Peridot is the 16th Wedding Anniversary jewellery.
Peridot gems are rare and are one of the only gems that come in only one colour. This is a beautiful olive green. However, the tint and intensity of this colour can vary between individual gems. Shades may vary from yellowish-green to olive to brownish-green, depending how much iron is contained within the structure of the crystal.
Though peridot is widely recognised by its brilliant green glow, the origin of this gem’s name is unclear. Most scholars agree that the word “peridot” is derived from the Arabic faridat, which means, “Gem,” but some believe it’s rooted in the Greek word peridona, meaning, “giving plenty.” Perhaps that’s why peridot is associated with prosperity and good fortune.
Peridot gemstones are actually among the oldest known gemstones. Beads were created by the Ancient Egyptians from this gem they called peridot the “gem of the sun,” believing it protected its wearer from terrors of the night. Other ancient cultures like the Romans and Greek popularly used peridot for their pendants, rings, and inlays among other items.
Peridot is the rare gem-quality variety of the common mineral olivine, which forms deep inside the earth’s mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanoes. In Hawaii, peridot symbolizes the tears of Pele, the volcano goddess of fire who controls the flow of lava. Rare, peridot is also found inside meteorites.
Also known as “the Evening Emerald” because its sparkling green hue looks brilliant any time of day, peridot is said to possess healing properties that protect against nightmares and evil, ensuring peace and happiness. Babies born in August are lucky to be guarded by peridot’s good fortune.
The August birthstone has been used for centuries as a talisman to protect and shield against dark and evil energies and entities. Peridot is said to increase prosperity and happiness! It is associated with love, truth, faithfulness, loyalty, dignity, and expansion. It is said to lessen anger, jealousy, and stress in relationships.

How to cleanse your birthstone
Equally important is to cleanse your birthstone regularly since the gemstone absorbs the negative energy from your body and your surroundings. Once a day by holding it under running lukewarm water for a short period of time will help this process. You could also visualise a white or golden light surrounding your gemstone and clear away any negativity, as you rinse the birthstone. Do this regularly – every morning or every evening – especially if you wear your jewellery on a regular basis. To charge the gemstone a little extra, leave it in the direct moonlight during the full moon.
No matter if it’s your birthstone or not, anyone can wear the August birthstone to heal themselves and to bring in some good luck into their lives.
