Sandie Porter, founder of Naturallyhers Organic Skincare is very clear about what led her into the world of organic skincare.
“When I lost my mother suddenly to cancer in 2011, I became aware of the possible links between parabens and cancer.
“I have always looked after my skin and used various products (it seems to have paid off, being a grandmother and not having many wrinkles at 57!) However, upon reading about the possible cancer links, I started to read more about what ingredients they contained. It was this point, I researched a company that helped me produce a range of organic paraben and sulphate free products.
“After lots of research and product trials, I launched my range in memory of my mum branded as ‘Naturallyhers’. My ultimate aim is to make people aware of exactly what they are putting on their skin and the damage it may cause.
“The skin is our biggest living organ and any products continually rubbed into the skin, can ultimately enter the blood stream. There are few companies producing skin products that are totally paraben and sulphate free and those that I found were very expensive. That’s why I felt there was a gap in the market.”
Parabens are a chemical compound found in everyday products – cosmetics, deodorants, face cream, shampoo and toothpaste etc. Recent studies suggest that these may be more harmful than we think. The biggest risk seems to be the use of products that require a prolonged exposure to the skin like face creams, body lotions etc.
“One type of paraben – methylparaben has been linked to premature ageing of the skin, especially when exposed to the sun. One of the biggest areas of concern is the effect of parabens on breast cancer. Several studies have found traces of parabens in women with breast cancer. Parabens may affect breast tissue – but whether they actually increase the possibility of breast cancer is still uncertain. Preventatives are, however, better than cure so I urge people to look at what is going into their skin care products to make informed decisions.”
Sulphates, like parabens are chemicals used in everyday beauty products. The greatest concern is sodium lauryl sulfate, a detergent found in approximately 90% of commercial shampoos. Also known as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), and sodium laurel sulfate (SLS), this chemical was found to damage protein formation in eye tissue in young animals, raising serious concerns about the possibility of ocular tissue malformation and blindness in infants and young children.
“My products are designed with pure skin care in mind and use only the purest and most natural ingredients. All are made to order with the finest ingredients. Only paraben and sulphate free ingredients are used and are sourced here in the UK. None of the products have been tested on animals.
“The ingredients are sourced from local farmers wherever possible and farmed organically. Organic farming ensures strict standards for animal welfare, energy efficiency, sustainability, fair trade and of course strict guidelines as to how the soil is treated and the avoidance of chemical poisons such as pesticides and herbicides.
“Many products on the market today use cheap synthetic chemicals, which replicate the aroma of products, that already exists in nature. Our products use no synthetic fragrances, they are all 100% natural. If you are smelling cranberry and pomegranate in our body butter then you are smelling the actual fruit, never synthetic chemicals!
“The range for babies has enabled me to educate mothers or at least make them aware so they have the choice of using these products to keep their babies’ and children’s skin free from parabens and sulphates.
“I have made my products unique by offering a bespoke fragrance service. There is a vast range of fragrances that can be added to most of my products, making them personal for the customers.
“I have always sold skincare ranges around my full time career in accounts and office management, so this was an exciting time for me to actually launch my own product. I started Naturallyhers on a very small budget with no financial backing, however the response to the products has been overwhelming. People are becoming more educated about the possible side effects of ingredients that manufacturers use and turning to Naturallyhers and promoting through word of mouth. Feedback has been great, with people loving the bespoke fragrance service and comparing the quality of the product of expensive high street brands.
“It's exciting times for the business and I am planning to add a new anti-ageing skin care range and range for men called, ‘Naturallyhis’. Take a look at our website for the new products coming soon…..”
