Entertainment Stop! Fright Night Uncharted: Golden Abyss Wipeout 2048

Fright Night

A remake of the 80s favourite, this update sees Colin Farrell take the lead as vampire Jerry Dandridge who moves next door to teenager Charlie Brewster (rising star Anton Yelchin).

When a number of teenagers go missing, Charlie’s friend Ed tries to convince him that there is something sinister going on.

Quickly, Charlie realizes that Jerry is a vampire, so he tries to prevent the charismatic neighbour from entering his house and seeks help from TV magician Peter Vincent (the excellent David Tennant), who proclaims himself as a specialist in vampire lore.

Anyone familiar with the original cult movie will feel right at home with this remake, which may not scare quite as much but certainly has fun and plays a lot of the story for laughs.

Farrell and Tennant steal most of their scenes whilst Anton Yelchin makes for a convincing nerd who turns cool to save the day and the damsel in distress.

Fright Night is out now on Blu-Ray, DVD and iTunes.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss

Nathan Drake and the Uncharted trilogy of games have become flagship titles for the PS3 and now with the release of Sony’s Vita system this week, the central character gets his first foray onto the small screen.

The standout features of the Playstation titles were exciting and engaging gameplay, coupled with great graphics and something often missing in most games titles – a compelling storyline.

Anyone concerned about whether Nathan Drake could make the transition to the handheld device can put those fears to rest because this delivers everything you could hope for in a portable version of the series.

Climb, jump, fight and negotiate your way through the lushly-detailed South American environment, making good use of the Vita’s innovative controls.

If the Vita is on your shopping list then this is the title you should be buying to really showcase its capabilities.

Don’t forget to check out our review of the Vita in this edition of Gadget Box and grab a chance to enter our great competition to win a device.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss is released this week exclusively for Playstation Vita.

Wipeout 2048

If you want to experience edge-of-your seat excitement on your handheld then Wipeout 2048 is the title for you.

With cutting edge graphics that drag you into the experience and a set of race challenges that will keep you coming back for more it’s the ultimate pick up and play experience.

And whilst the solo play is rewarding, the online multiplayer options worked into the title lift the game onto a completely new level. Time for a face off with friends or try to better your rivals’ high score through WIFI and 3G play.

If this is a taste of what Vita can deliver then we can expect great things from Sony in the future and maybe, just maybe, they can recover some of the ground lost to the likes of mobile phones and Apple’s portable devices.

Wipeout 2048 is released this week exclusively for Playstation Vita.

Little Acorns

Anyone who loves the old-fashioned platform titles will no doubt really enjoy Little Acorns from Chillingo.

Available for all Apple portable devices, the idea is to guide Mr Nibbles, the acorn-hoarding squirrel, through a variety of zany levels.

Featuring 60 stages and taking your character through four seasons, Little Acorns is a captivating title that really had me thinking back to the days of Mario and the great sideways-scrollers of old.

If you want to while away the hours and don’t mind going a little nuts in the process then this is the title for you.

Little Acorns is available now on the Apple App Store.
