One of the things I like most about my role as a journalist is meeting so many exceptional and inspirational women from all walks of the business path. Not only do they very often launch successful companies but they do so whilst simultaneously fulfilling the challenging roles of wife and mother.

So it was delightful and yet not entirely unexpected to discover the story of Esther Fieldgrass, the founder of EF MediSpa, was another tale worth telling.

When I arrived at EF MediSpa in stylish, affluent Kensington, home of “London’s most comprehensive menu of holistic and medical aesthetic treatments” meeting Esther turned out to be a much more rewarding experience that I had first anticipated.

We all have perceptions of people and I have to admit that as I waited in the glass fronted reception area for her to arrive, I had a prejudiced mental image of an exaggerated woman pieced together by plastic surgery and botox. In short, I was expecting “fish lips” and the “hard sell”.

As this smiling middle-aged woman approached me with a warm, natural smile and extended a hand in welcome, I scolded myself for being so inwardly cynical.

Esther originates from the Midlands but in her youth, studying and her career took her first to Bournemouth and then to London, which is now home to her unique “One-Stop Spa”, combining aesthetic treatments with the latest medical advances and traditional complementary therapies.

“We have a very mixed clientele here, ranging from Saudi princesses and members of the Jordanian royal family, through to A-list celebrities and even a large selection of the general public, people just like you and me.

“As you can imagine, this type of business can sometimes be a difficult one to promote and much of my custom has developed through positive recommendations from existing clientele. Women are my main visitors and as a women myself, I can say that we love to talk. Word of mouth works wonders for any business and I still believe it is the most effective way of recruiting new customers. “

Though her looks wouldn’t have you believe it, Esther’s reputation began to develop back in the 70’s where she worked on a 3-year hairdressing apprenticeship, something that was some way off the kind of work she is involved with today.

She was awarded a Master Craftsman Diploma, which is one of the more select and famous hairdressing awards available and this honour led her to take up a position at the prestigious Robert Fielding salon in Regent Street.

“Rubbing shoulders with celebrities and the hierarchy encouraged me to open my own salon and on my 21st birthday that was exactly what I did. My first shop opened in Barnes and soon after I opened a second in Notting Hill Gate.

“Because I was always looking tomove things forward, I then decided to diversify and used the available basement in Notting Hill Gate, converting it and launching the fore runner to EF MediSpa.”

Not long after, whilst Esther was still in her 30s, her husband was offered a job in Hong Kong and during her time there, she discovered Reiki, which is a system of natural healing that is more popular than ever now in the UK.

Sampling the treatment herself as she suffered from bronchitis at the time, she was amazed at the results and both she and her husband were so enthused that they decided to take training in Hong Kong.

Esther qualified as an intuitive and spiritual healer and achieved the rank of Reiki Master over 7 years ago.

“I was intrigued that no-one had really fused the best of holistic traditions with high tech rejuvenation solutions. I could only see the two approaches as a complementary route to achieving the ultimate goal of inner well being and outer beauty.”

The longer I spent at EF MediSpa the more I realised that I was somewhere special; somewhere different to many of the other places I had visited before.

‘We are constantly researching the latest high tech treatments and skincare products, like Vaser lipoand Smartlipo (an instant fat removal procedure without general anesthetic) and we continue to seek out the best and safest solutions for all our clients.”

In the 21 century it is not only the women who care about their appearance; feel guilty no longer ladies because 20% of men now undergo cosmetic treatments of some kind and this figure is rapidly rising.

With such a wide menu of treatments available to women, Esther took me through the basics of a few of them, pointing out that breast enlargement, skin tightening, permanent pain-free hair removal and Mesotherapy (a treatment to rejuvenate and enhance skin complexions) count amongst the most popular.

“We pride ourselves on our product and our service, aspiring for excellence. If we employ the best, then I can be assured that is exactly what my clients receive.

EF MediSpa claims to have brought together the most diverse team of medical aestheticians, surgeons, and cosmetic dentists, coupled with the most advanced laser, electromagnetic and radio frequency equipment and an advanced skincare store available.

After my time with Esther I didn’t doubt it.

As a businesswoman she is focused and enthusiastic about her company but she never demonstrates anything but total, sincere conviction in the services she offers.

Over the coming weeks, we at WomenTalking will be trialling a number of the EF MediSpa treatments first hand for the exclusive assessment of our readers so watch this space.

As for Esther Fieldgrass; she made me feel totally at ease with her natural manner and if her business was a reflection of her personality then I have to say that EF MediSpa is some place I will be coming back to time and time again.
