Banking on Success

Nicola Horlick has courted her fair share of publicity over recent years and although cynics might point to the fact that she is a gentle manipulator of the press, not all her spells in the limelight have proven to be comfortable or desirable ones.

From a media point of view Nicola first came to prominence in 1997 when her much publicised confrontation with former employers Morgan Grenfell (during which time she flew to Germany and demanded that she be reinstated to her £1.5 million a year position) made headlines all over Europe.
It was this episode more than any other which really cemented her reputation as one of London's most influential female executives and made her a darling with the tabloids in the process.

Here was a woman who was prepared to stand up to corporate banking – a male stronghold in the business world – and strike a victorious blow for working women (with children) everywhere.

However, to judge her purely on this incident would be doing her a great disservice since her success in the banking world is well known. In the early 1990s she turned around the ailing Morgan Grenfell Investment Management group, immediately raising her profile amongst her peers and demonstrating that even with the pressures of raising a large family, she could function as a successful business woman, independent of her social demands and family commitments.

Recently, WomenTalking caught up with Nicola Horlick in an exclusive interview where she gave us her insight into the state of the business world for women.
