Birthstones

Birthstones have great historical significance. Emeralds are said to bring clarity of vision. Diamonds - Not just a girl's best friend! The Ruby represents the blood of life.

The history of birthstones can be traced back 3000 years. The origin of the twelve monthly birthstones was thought to have originated in the Bible as they were found on the breastplates of Aaron: a ceremonial religious garment set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel. Many found a correspondence with the twelve signs of the zodiac.

In later times, the stones became associated with the twelve months of the year and many believed that the stones possessed power when worn or owned. Wearing the appropriate traditional birthstones can heal your body and sooth your mind.

Birthstones are a great way of harnessing the cosmic power of planets and using it to enhance your living. Many also consider them lucky charms and so was born the tradition of giving and wearing birthstones.

January – Birthstone: Garnet
Legend has it, that Noah hung a large garnet in the ark for illumination! The garnet was believed to protect from nightmares and give guidance at night. The Crusaders used them as protection against wounds and accidents during their journeys. Today, it is a symbol for guidance and constancy and considered to channel faith to the people born in January.

February – Birthstone: Amethyst
For many years the amethyst has been a symbol of peace and tranquility! It is said to possess miraculous powers and bring good luck during wars or hunts. It wards off evil spirits and has medicinal and cleaning properties. It is also said to be the stone of Saint Valentine, who wore an amethyst engraved with the figure of his assistant, Cupid.

March – Birthstone: Aquamarine
The aquamarine was said to be a lucky stone for sailors, since it ensured a safe journey by water. This stone was also supposed to renew married love, as well as ensure a long and happy married life.Aquamarine has also been a symbol for everlasting youth and said to contain magical and healing properties. It is also associated with feelings like sympathy, trust, harmony and friendship.

April – Birthstone: Diamond
A diamond is one of the most precious and desired stones since the dawn of time; they are supposed to bring the wearer happiness and wealth. Warriors believed if they wore diamonds into battle that the gems would give them strength and courage and they were protected against evil.Today, the gem is a symbol that reflects true love, commitment and passion.

May – Birthstone: Emerald
The Emeralds magnificent colour has been said to rest and relieve the eyes, particularly for those who’s work may be taxing on the eye. Emerald stones possess healing powers. They are said to cure headaches, soothing fears and irritations and preventing attacks of epilepsy.The emerald is a symbol for happiness and fertility, love and commitment.

June- Birthstone: Pearl
The pearl is a universal symbol of purity, and possesses mystical powers; these can have a positive or negative influence over circumstances.It symbolizes beauty, love, happiness and wealth and is considered a sign of opulence and power it today's society.

July – Birthstone: Ruby
During medieval times, many thought the ruby could warn of misfortune or illness to its owner by turning a deeper red. Today, it is a symbol for nobility. This stone is responsible for bringing peace and prosperity and has certain medicinal and healing powers.It represents blood, love, romance and passion.

August- Birthstone: Peridot
Ancient legends considered the peridot as a powerful amulet that warded off evil. It is considered as a symbol of power and influence. Peridot is associated with good luck, good health and peace. It enhances prosperity and growth. Peridot also symbolizes strength, faithfulness and truth. This stone is believed to have the power to repel evil spirits and overcome nightmares.

September – Birthstone: Sapphire
It is a common theory that the Ten Commandments were written on tablets made of Sapphire. Sapphires render the qualities like clear thinking and wisdom to the people born in September. Many felt the gem gave its owner the ability to foretell the future. In ancient times Sapphire was used as an antidote for poison and also a cure for a number of illnesses. Sapphires stand for loyalty, faithfulness, truth, sincerity and reliability in a relationship.

October – Birthstone: Opal
The Romans considered the gem to be a symbol of love, hope and harmony to people born in October. Opal is considered to strengthen eyesight and memory. It has protective powers to ward of evil and nightmares. The wearer generates qualities like confidence, happiness, loyalty and faithfulness.

November – Birthstone: Topaz
In ancient lore, it was believed that topaz could control heat and cool boiling water, as well as calm excessive anger. Topaz was once thought to strengthen the mind, prevent mental disorders, and increase wisdom. Topaz is believed to offer long life and fidelity to those born in November.

December – Birthstone: Turquoise
Turquoise was used in some of the earliest jewellery known to man. Turquoise is considered a symbol of good fortune, prosperity and success. It also promises good health and peace. This stone is thought to be one of strength and protector from physical and psychic sensitivity.
